Research in the Schlau-Cohen group uses a combination of single-molecule and ultrafast spectroscopy to explore the energetic and structural dynamics of biological systems. There are two major research thrusts. The first is single-molecule spectroscopy, which is a tool to explore conformational dynamics. The second merges optical spectroscopy with model membrane systems to probe how biological processes extend beyond the nanometer scale of individual proteins. We use these approaches to explore the underlying mechanisms of membrane proteins. In particular, we focus on understanding the efficiency and adaptability of energy transduction in photosynthetic light harvesting.
